Whether it’s the Fashion, the Friendships or the sexual tension, the HBO Hit Show “Sex in the City” has made a major impact on all women around the globe; even some Men. Writer/Director Michael Patrick King and Co-Executive Producer Sarah Jessica Parker, who dominated the role as Journalist Carrie Bradshaw, has turned the show into the Motherland of Friendships and Fashion combined with a sexual twist. Articles and magazines publications speculated a “bitter rivalry” between the co-stars, who included Cynthia Nixon, Kim Cattrall and Kristen Davis. But all denied the allegations saying that they all “Socialize(d) when they were not working together”. I believe so!
When it comes to friendships, REAL friendships, you can’t fake a true bond. The connection that Carrie, Miranda (Nixon), Samantha and Charlotte (Davis) shared on camera wasn’t just acting, it was also a reality. They go to the theatre together, go to each others house for dinner and have children who supposedly play together. And all of this occurred off set.
Kim Cattrall who played Samantha Jones admitted that “working 90-hours a week can be stressful but it’s an amazing thing that happened between all of that”……..the chemistry among the four of them are very strong; millions of people can second that. But, when it came to the fashion and style of the hit television show, we could agree that all four ladies were very fashionable yet unique and eccentric. It seemed, to myself, that the various relationships they have had throughout the series, somehow, had intertwined with their style choices. Let’s start with Sarah Jessica Parker famously known as Carrie Bradshaw.
Carrie went through the most relationship problems on the show because of Big (Chris Noth), who eventually ends up being her husband. Before the marriage, Big put Carrie through a lot of heartbreak and that showed through her fashion. Carrie style varied with her problems. It was almost like she dressed for her mood. Sad days, she wore flats and the world knows how much Carrie loved her Manolo Blahniks. However, it showed much style; like a Style story.
Samantha went through the least relationship problems. She tried being monogamous but she just found herself getting bored and wanting to live the single life. Relationships weren’t her thing, Sex was, and that’s how she expressed her style. Samantha was sexy. confident and strong just like her choice of styles. Her fashion sense shows more love for herself than love for a man. It showed the highest of Self-gratification.
Charlotte was very traditional, very conventional and she went through relationship problems solely because of that. She went through all her relationships wearing “Rose Colored Glasses” meaning she was very optimistic about love but ended up expecting too much and getting let down. Charlotte was a very timid and classy women which was also a way to describe her style. She wore pearls and dressed like a modern-day housewife and true perfectionist who throughout the series, longed for her true perfect love and the soul mate to start a family with. She finally found that with Harry (Evan Handler).
And last but not least there’s Miranda. She was a career-minded individual, so a relationship was the last thing she worried about. Until one man, Steve (David Eigenberg), changed that and “BOOM”, she didn’t know right away but she had found the one. That Onomatopoeia is a dramatic way to also describe her sense of style. It came out of no where like BOOM! Miranda style had a tom boy chic feel but she experienced growth much like her personality and in relationships. Throughout the years on the show , she didn’t befriend much trends. She dressed as she pleased. Nevertheless, as she started dating, she started caring more about her hairstyles and dressing more style savvy. Her choices of fashion just grew from there. The more she trusted men, the more she trusted fashion, style and beyond!
Friendships they built, Fashion they bought, Style they had and when all of these four friends combined their fashion and style, they’ve created a friendship like no other. Who else misses this “Fashion filled with Friendship” series?
